Abstract:

The article presents a review of the situation with a public education in some districts of the Tula province in the early 70-ies of the XIX century. «The Tula eparchial gazette» and the Tula region state archive materials are used as a sources of information. In the period under review, the number of schools in the Tula province were 600 in total. Over 20,000 people were taught there. Most of the teachers were graduates of religious educational institutions. The priests, peasants, tradesmen, servants and retired soldier also worked there as the teachers. The main problem of public education was a lack of funds, which affected the quality of education. The district council, the nobility and the clergy provided some support for public education. During this period the city schools funding was annually increased by municipal dumas.
