Abstract:

The unsuccessful war with Japan for Russia showed the limits of its capabilities in the Far Eastern region, and radically changed the balance of forces in the East. The «Oriental» ideas of Ukhtomsky about the peaceful expansion of Russia´s influence in Asia, its «awakening», patronage over the eastern countries and peoples proved to be impracticable. Accordingly, the order of the day were no longer historical tasks in the East, and the need to exit from the internal crisis that culminated in the revolutionary events of 1905.
