Abstract:

The Tolstoys’ activity against alcoholism is studied in the paper. An important direction in this case was the writing accusatory articles on the topic. Leo Tolstoy coordinated the production of scientific-popular literature on this subject published by "Intermediary". Calendars, books, leaflets with information about the dangers of alcohol were published with his directly involved. Leo Tolstoy gave high priority to the art in the fight against this disease. Tolstoy wrote a number of works of art, which were performed on the stages of the national theatres. He founded the first non-state temperance society in 1887. Leo Tolstoy involved his family to anti-alcohol propaganda. The Tolstoys corresponded with temperance societies, made appeals in the press on this issue. The youngest daughter of the writer arranged lectures and performances on anti-alcohol theme in the people´s house (public cultural and educational institution) and the school of Yasnaya Polyana in the 1920-ies.
