Abstract:

The article discusses the activities of the society «Down with illiteracy» in the city of Tula at the initial stage of its development. It touches on the problems of its formation and the difficulties that he had to face at the initial stage of his activity to combat illiteracy. The article provides data on the number of literate people in the city of Tula and the Tula province according to the 1926 census of the population in the USSR. It is considered how much the number of literate adults of both sexes has changed in comparison with the data of past censuses. These figures show the success of the society «Down with illiteracy» in the fight against the eradication of illiteracy in the city of Tula, which later became a reserve for the eradication of illiteracy in the entire Tula province.
