Abstract:

The article is dedicated to the work of Elisabetta Sirani, who was Bolognese painter of the XVII th century. Educated by her father, Giovanni Andrea Sirani, who worked in Guido Reni’s workshop, the female painter was influenced indirectly by the latter. Despite the sudden death at the age of 27, E. Sirani left a significant artistic legacy. She often used С. Ripa’s «The Iconologia» as a source. Creating religious images E. Sirani followed the decisions of the Council of Trent and the principles articulated by G. Paleotti. In her work E. Sirani tried to avoid images that demonstrated increased expression and drama. She paid great attention to the demonstration of honor, dignity and external beauty of her characters.
