Abstract:

Since antiquity, the stable equestrian image was the heavenly patron, horse warrior, defeating the enemy. Over time, the image of the saint, who protects his people from disasters, replaced by a symbolic image of the equestrian triumphant king. In the image of the “The Bronze Horseman” (Mednyi Vsadnik) he became one of the cultural symbols of Russian history. In Nicholas I Russia, the image of the rider became a visible embodiment of imperial triumph. The idea of the triumphant-ruler of a vast and powerful empire, most fully embodied in the equestrian monument to Nicholas I by P.K. Klodt. As a supplement, we publish a bibliographical rarity from the personal collection of the Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich, son of Emperor Nicholas I, in the State Archive of the Russian Federation – “The Highest Endorsed Opening Ceremony of the Monument to Emperor Nicholas I”, which explains and supplements the main provisions of the article.
