Abstract:
During the First World War, the Kingdom of Romania was an ally of the Russian
Empire on the Eastern front. Romania entered the war two years after it began, in August 1916. However, its commitment to the Entente was evident from the beginning of the war. Therefore, in 1914-1916. Russia and Romania established close economic ties, which were in the nature of cooperation between future allies. Romania´s economic weakness as an agricultural country was reflected in its dependence on major neighboring powers for manufactured goods. Trade between
Russia and Romania consisted of Russian supplies of industrial and raw materials required by the Romanians in exchange for the political loyalty of the Kingdom. However, the Romanian side also needed to export food, which was not enough in its own production. This aspect of Russian Romanian economic relations is discussed in the article.
