Abstract:

one of the major victories of Russian weapons in World War I was the capture of the Austrian fortress of Przemysl. Due to the lack of heavy artillery, the fortress was taken after a long siege, but with a force half that of the garrison. The commander of the Siege (11th) army was appointed General Selivanov, for whom this appointment was the only one in the war. After the fall of the fortress, in violation of the St. George Statute, Komandarm-11 was awarded the order of St. George, 3rd class, although it did not have a previous degree. This award was due to political, rather than purely military, reasons.
