Abstract:

Russian imperial army regiments during the First World War bore the names of great generals, foreign regimental chiefs, past victories of the Russian army, and, most of them – cities of the Russian Empire. At the beginning of hostilities, the second-line infantry regiments formed during the mobilization of July 1914 were to become the second echelon of the Russian active army. One of these units was the 223rd Odoyevsky Infantry Regiment, which bears the name of one of the cities of the Tula Region. Formed in Smolensk, the Odoyevsky Regiment was baptized in action at the final stage of the East Prussian Offensive in August 1914.
